De Cajon with Marina Lavalle at Club Sur in SODO. Afro-Peruvian singer Marina Lavalle was one of Peru Negro's first voices and an important figure in the resurgence of Afro-Peruvian music in the 70's. She is currently one of the most distinctive performers in the Bay Area. Accompanied by guitar, bass and Peruvian cajón, Marina renders a soulful and vibrant interpretation of an array of rhythms from her musical heritage. We will also be doing another show with Marina tomorrow night at Andina in Portland.

April 21— Bone Poets Orchestra at OM Culture in Seattle. $15 ADV, $20 door.

May 12-13— Seattle Rock Orchestra plays the Beatles’ Revolver and Rubber Sole at the Moore Theater

May 18—De Cajon opening for the Jefferson Rose Band at Nectar Lounge in Fremont.

I have also been feverishly working on some stuff in Ableton Live, hoping to launch my soundcloud page soon….STAY TUNED!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Next Friday, December 9, the Bushwick Book Club of Seattle Presents the Seattle Rock Orchestra and guests performing music inspired by the Hunter S. Thompson memoir, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Featuring performances by Led to Sea, Tai Shan, The Thoughts, Bucket of Honey, Mike Votava, Andrew Nunez, Jason Dodson, Hannah Williams of Youth Rescue Mission Emily Westman and Galen Green. Should be a rad night!

The very next night, De Cajon Project will be playing a benefit show at San Fernando Peruvian restaurant in Seattle. We are bringing in guest artist Miguel Ballumbrosio from Peru and it is going be a fun evening. DJ Cesar will be closing the evening out with some cumbia. Come out!

Things to come--I have just been asked to do a tour with my favorite laptopist/percussionist Filastine at the end of January. I will probably only be able to do Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, but I am really looking forward to playing with Grey again. His music is amazing. I am also hoping to play with the Seattle Rock Orchestra next month when they accompany local soul singer Allen Stone at the Neptune. Happy Holidays!

Well I Guess I'll Join Another Band

I have done a couple of gigs with the eccentric Bone Poets Orchestra and they have been a blast! The music is interesting and fun and the folks involved in the group are SUPER TALENTED. Their cellist is leaving so I will be joining the group for the indefinite future. YAY!!! MORE MUSIC!!!

Other than that, it has been a quiet summer for music. I'm gearing up to head back to school in a few weeks. Something new for me this year is that I am starting and advanced after-school choir at Washington Middle School in Central District. I am super excited to be teaching choir again.

Kelli's Starlight Wishes Wrapping Up Debut Album!!

It has been a long time since I posted, and it is not because I didn't have anything interesting to say!! The most notable musical experience I had recently was playing at the Paramount Theater with Filastine at a sold-out show opening for Bass Nectar . Besides that and some other random gigs, most of my energy has been put towards finishing up overdubs and mixing of Kelli’s Starlight Wishes’ debut record. We recorded with Scott Colburn over the summer, and have more recently been mixing with Jeffrey McNulty, the engineer at the Vera Project . We have taken a short break from playing live shows while we try out a new violinist, but should resume playing sometime this spring. Click here to read some love from Levi Fuller, Ball of Wax curator.

Seattle Rock Orchestra Performs Pet Sounds

On Saturday, November 13, the Seattle Rock Orchestra (of which i am a member) will be performing the entire Beach Boys' record "Pet Sounds"! This will be one of three concerts in our series this year. In the winter we will be doing a Radiohead show, and in the spring, QUEEN! These are all bound to be very fun. Click here for ticket info.

Also, Kelli's Starlight Wishes has finished recording and now we are trying to raise the funds to pay for our record! We have officially kicked off our fundraising by creating a Kickstarter Page. Kickstarter is a place for artists and non-profits to help raise money for their various projects. Please visit our page here and take a minute to watch the video. Every little bit helps!

Sonarchy Radio Broadcast

A few months ago, I recorded with the Steve Tresler Group for Sonarchy Radio on Kexp. It finally aired this past monday morning at midnight. It will be streaming on the KEXP Website for the next week and half, and then hopefully you will be able to download it as a podcast in ITunes (search Sonarchy Radio). IT sounds really good! The only regret I have is that the cello doesn't sound very natural since I playing through an Amp. I should have had him mic me and just be heard in the headphones and not in the room. OH WELL! I really hope that Steve asks me to play live with him some day . . .

The next gig I have is with De Cajon at Hidmo Eritrean Restaurant in the Central District. This performance is in honor of Afro-Peruvian Cultural Day, on June 6. We will be playing for two sets, so come on down!

Bowie at the Moore

Phew! The last month as been completely crazy. The first gig of my marathon was on Saturday, February 13 with Nancy Coltom. We played a very romantic valentine's dinner at a lovely place called Tree House Point.. IT was a lovely experience to play in that setting with such an amazing singer/songwriter. I hope to do it again!

I played twice with my band, the newly named "Kelli's Starlight Wishes"--once at the Rendezvous and once at the Josephine.

The first friday of March, I played with the Seattle Rock orchestra at the Triple Door backing up the orchestral pop group GRAND HALLWAY. You can see a clip of the here. Unfortunately i am sitting too far stage right to be seen :(

My next musical adventure was playing with a small orchestra for a lunchtime concert at Seattle City Hall. We played the magical music of Jherek Bischoff. I had the opportunity to play with some serious heavyweights at that concert. You can learn more about Jherek and hear some of his lovely music here.

Last but most certainly not least was the experience of playing at the Moore theater with the Seattle Rock Orchestra last Friday night. i have to say, i was considering bagging out on this gig due to burn out, but Scott Teske, the group's leader, talked me out of it. MAN i would have kicked myself if i hadn't done it. It was intense--two long rehearsals covering a LOT of music PLUS a very long rehearsal/sound check day of show. That intensity paid off. Performing with the likes of Jon Auer of the Posies was very thrilling. As an added bonus, I got the extreme honor to perform with a very small group from the orchestra LIVE on KEXP! I will post photos and video from that as soon as I get it. In the meantime, you can watch video of our performance of "Starman" with Jon Auer.

Of course the night of the Bowie show, i lost my voice and have since developed a very nasty chest cold. I feel terrible. I guess that is my body telling me to SLOW DOWN!
